“Competition between artists at the world’s biggest art event has never been more fierce. But what happens in the Biennale’s national pavilions?

EVER since the Venice Biennale was launched in 1895, individual countries have offered their artists a showcase in national pavilions. Some are financed through their culture ministries, such as Italy’s, others, like Britain’s, through the ministry of foreign affairs. The Ukraine pavilion is paid for by a private collector, Poland’s via multiple sources. For 55 years there were fewer than 20 entrants, but in 1950 the number began to grow. This year, despite last-minute cancellations from Bahrain and Lebanon, there are 89 national pavilions, the highest number ever and up from 77 two years ago, proof of the global spread of contemporary art.

The scale of the Venice Biennale means that artists, cultural institutions and individual countries all vie, not just for attention, but for international recognition. The national pavilions take many forms, yet only a few make any real impact. …”

Third Avenue Art District
Annual ArtWalk

This Saturday
February 6, 2010
6-10pm

The fifteenth year of the Third Ave Art District Artwalk will be a memorable occasion, when the nine Third Avenue Studio Artists open their studios for the Annual Artwalk on the 6th of February 2010 from 6pm to 10pm.

This group of professional artists has persistently focused its’ efforts for fifteen years on creating a visual arts district in Fort Lauderdale. In the professional world, these artists are national and international award winning talents visible in museum and public and private collections. Artists include: Francie Bishop Good, Tobey Archer, Madeline Denaro, Tin Ly, Rosanna Saccoccio, Mary Lou Siefker, Wilma Bulkin Siegal, Margi Glavovic Nothard and Janet Gold.

Also participating in this year’s Artwalk is Set to Manual, an exhibition presented by Girls’ Club, a non-profit alternative space exhibiting contemporary art by women. Set to Manual includes works by thirty artists in diverse media characterized by intensive hand manufacture. Local gallery 18 Rabbit will also be open during the Art Walk and will be presenting the opening of In Advance of the Failing Light, an installation by Blaine Siegel. The Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale will also open its doors to the public as part of the tour.

[Editor's note: It's too bad this only happens once a year. Fort Lauderdale's reputation for art will never grow if more regularly scheduled events of this type are not held. There are things in western Broward, but this is downtown, the supposed heart of the city.]
